The CO2 laser emits a wavelength of 10,600nm in the far-infrared range, which has the property of being strongly absorbed by moisture within skin tissue. The absorbed energy instantly heats the moisture to its boiling point and vaporizes it, thereby thinly removing the target tissue or eliminating lesions.
Around the vaporized tissue, a thermal coagulation layer of a certain thickness forms; this layer can help stop bleeding right after the procedure and is also known to stimulate fibroblasts in the dermis to induce collagen production and rearrangement. Compared with the Er:YAG laser, heat tends to be transmitted over a relatively wider area, which is why the intensity must be set with a balance between the lesion-removal effect and the recovery period in mind.
Irradiation methods include applying it locally to the lesion area and a fractional method that divides the irradiation into dots at regular intervals, and the choice can be made according to the treatment purpose and area.
