Radiesse takes the form of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microparticles about 25-45 micrometers in diameter mixed into a carboxymethylcellulose gel, with about 30% of the total volume composed of CaHA particles.
- Immediately after injection, the gel component forms an immediate sense of volume.
- The gel is then gradually absorbed over several weeks, and the remaining CaHA particles stimulate surrounding fibroblasts.
- The stimulated fibroblasts are reported to induce the production of connective tissue, including collagen (types I and III).
In this way, the combination of an immediate volume effect and a subsequent collagen-inducing effect is described as a characteristic of Radiesse, and over time the CaHA particles themselves are gradually broken down and absorbed in the body.
