Iontophoresis works on the principle of using the polarity of galvanic direct current. When a current of the same polarity as the ionized active ingredient is passed through the skin, an electrical repulsive force arises between like charges, causing the ingredient to move into the epidermal layer of the skin.
In this process, an electrolyte solution acts as a medium that smooths the flow of current, and by using the electrical properties of the positive and negative poles, acidic or basic ingredients are each driven in together with a current of the appropriate polarity.
